Two US college students were arrested and detained for two weeks in Denmark after an alleged altercation with an Uber driver. The students, Owen Ray and his friend, were on spring break in Copenhagen when the incident occurred.
The Incident
The students had ordered an Uber to return to their hotel but realized they had selected the wrong destination. They canceled the ride, which was automatically paid via the app. However, the driver disputed the payment, leading to a confrontation.
Arrest and Detention
The students were arrested at the airport as they attempted to leave the country and were held in pre-trial detention for 10 days. They were released from prison but are still required to report daily to police in Denmark until their court hearing on April 24.
Ongoing Investigation
The case is ongoing, with the Uber driver’s dash cam footage being part of the court evidence. The students’ attorney calls the case a “misunderstanding,” while the students’ parents maintain that their sons were the victims of an unprovoked assault.
